In Jesus's time, people did not have surnames. They were, for example, Isaac, son of Abraham, or Cain, son of Adam. Jesus was most likely called Jesus, son of Joseph. I believe that people were also named for their professions as well. Since Jesus was a carpenter, he most likely was named something having to do with his profession.

Christ is a Greek word meaning saviour (Christos). There were no surnames at that time; people were called by where they were from sometimes though - Jesus of Nazareth.
