Or is it a vestigial organ from our evolutionary past when our primate ancestors were pure vegetarians and it served a digestive purpose then?

In Scandanavian countries they remove the appendix from babies so as to avoid appendicitis when they get older.

One of our distant ancestors used their appendix to aid in the digestion of plant matter. Sure we don't need it anymore, but no one ever said evolution was smart or neat, merely effective.

Unless our environment changes radically so that for future generations the abscence of an appendix would prove an advantage (ie increase our chances of living long enough to have offspring), then there is no reason to suppose the damn thing is going anywhere anytime soon.

The ‘vestigial’ organ argument for evolution is an old argument and it is not valid.

First, it is impossible to prove that an organ is useless. The function may simply be unknown and its use may be discovered in the future. This has happened with more than 100 formerly alleged useless vestigial organs in humans, that are now known to be essential.

Second, even if the alleged vestigial organ were no longer needed, it would prove ‘devolution’ not evolution. The creation model allows for deterioration of a perfect creation since the Fall. However, the particles-to-people evolution model needs to find examples of nascent organs, i.e., those which are increasing in complexity.

No, it is not vestigial. It is part of the immune system. It serves a purpose. You can live without it though like a kidney or an eye. Our so-called tail bone is also functional. There is no such thing as a vestigial organ.

When god was performing surgery on Adam to remove a rib, he accidentally slipped an nicked his intestine. The scare tissue formed an appendix. Science proves this through faith.
