This is the very basic "flight or fight" response with a slight twist, intent. In this case, intentional stress to provoke the reaction. It takes a finite amount of TIME for you to stress yourself and provoke the response, so you ramp up slower to the point your muscles are primed and ready. Under imminent threat, it takes mere seconds, but when you override things with your mind, it takes several minutes to get the identical effect. Anyway, just as this effect ramps up slower, it ramps back down in a similar manner but that has nothing to do with your intent. Actually, I think this in real life is because there might be another threat nearby. There is no reason to think the threat was a singular event. Wolves, for example, hunt in a pack. In some cases of threat, it makes sense to assume the worst and another threat is near and about to attack, so if you did NOT ramp back down slowly, you might very well survive if there was another threat very soon after the first as you would still BE prepared. It makes sense to rapidly respond and slowly wind back down. People who were involved in another threat soon after and were still ready would have survived, while those who slowed down quickly were caught unaware by the second threat and died as a result. Selective breeding, natural selection, promoted the slower ramp down over the quicker ramp down. The same applied to quicker response time. After all, the one who responds quickest is more likely to get away to survive to propagate then the slower ones who got caught and died.

You could kill yourself...but that would be immoral and not the brightest choice. You could try to remain motionless and keep the temperature as cold as possible...Step into a freezer, shut the door, and take a nap for a bit.
