Plants can be considered at the bottom of the food chain for several reasons. One- they produce their own food for the most part making it difficult for them to move higher on the food chain. Second-they are stationary and cannot move to get food or to get away from predators also putting them pretty low on the food chain.

Hope that helps

Of all the organisms that make up the food chain, the plants are the only ones that can make use of sunlight to prepare their own food-autotrophs. The successive levels depend on the previous ones for food....like-herbivores on plants, carnivores on herbivores and so on....
Its is the only logical way the food chain can be organised.

They are at the bottom of the food chain because they haven't evolved to eat humans yet.

A carnivorous plant would not be at the bottom of the food chain. Way to go Venus Fly Trap!

In my opinion, plants are at the bottom of the food chain because they produce their own food through photosynthesis and they do not take in any living organisms to survive. Even though they take up nutrients/elements such as Nitrogen, these are not considered living organisms.

because most plants eat water and sunlight not other animals, so if you think about it food cycles are circles! Some plants, like the Venus Fly Trap, eat bugs or dead meat so they're not at the bottom!

The reason why any or all plants are at the bottom of the food chain is because every thing eats and live off of them.
If there was no plants nothing can live. Plants are food, give us air and feeds all small living things.
(small animals live off of plants.
med animals live off of small animals.
big animals live off of med animals. ect...)
That is the way of life.

the sundew isn't. YEAH!!! But they are there because our whole food chain revolves around plants. I really can't explain. DId you pay attention in school? Ok, let me help you understand. Deer eat corn. Human eats deer. Bear eats human. etc. As you can see, it is the root of the food chain.

I thought soil and water were at the bottom of the food chain.

Because most of them are not carnivores and are unable to move rapidly they are by nature exposed to attack....some fight back with poisonous toxins, others produce sharp barbs as a defence, but overall, the majority are defenceless and as such easy prey.

Well, if you think about it, a plant can't really "fend" for itself.
