He's the patron of hopeless causes. You can pray him for the impossible, and see what happens.

I'm a catholic and when my vet told me that my beautiful dog (Pic) was not going to make it ... I asked St Jude to itervene in my favour. Vet phoned me following morning telling me it was not short of a miracle but my dog was going to make it!

Desperate cases. The thinking was that St. Jude's name was so close to Judas' that you'd only call on him if you were truely desperate.
