There are many best rod and reels. The choice is a matter of prefference.
You can obtain a decent rod and reel from Wal-Mart at a cost of about $44.00. Do not buy the pole that seperates in half. I lost a big Bass because of that. It snapped right at the joint. I was using a 17lb Trilene line with a medium light pole which was a wrong move and it snapped and I lost the fish.
Rules of engagement for Bass fishing are tricky, but remember this...never buy a reel with a plastic spool. because the heat of the sun makes them soft and the cold air makes them brittle. When you finally put 17 or 20 lb test on it and tighten your drag to about 15 ln thrust, your spool will split and the line will ball up like a big mess and if you have a big fish...you're cooked.
