Since I don't know where you are situated, I'm going to guess that the birds are European Starlings. If they aren't.... well, hopefully this will answer the issue either way....

If you're aiming just to have songbirds at your feeders (sparrows, chickadees, finches), there are birdfeeders out there that have a built-in wire mesh around the entire feeder. The square spaces in the mesh only allow small birds, such as those listed above, to slip through the spaces and reach the feeder within.

Another method is to buy a feeder that has weight sensitive perches. Anything heavier than a small bird pushes the perch down, cutting off access to the seed. While these feeders are more expensive, they are very sturdy, so you should have years of use out of one feeder.

If, perhaps, your issues are with Common Grackles or Red-Winged Blackbirds.... well, I welcome them to my feeders, simply because they add to the disversity. Since their diets aren't fully based on seeds, they hardly take enough seed to pose an issue.

Grackles and blackbirds like corn and cheap seeds. If you want desirable birds, try a mix of black oil sunflower and safflower for the Cardinals.
