Yes, here are some tips:

At first, stop giving him his food in the dish. For a few days, feed him carefully by plopping a few kibbles in the dish at a time. Basically you are showing that YOU control the food dish, not him.

Once you have done that for a while (few days), start feeding him like normal in the food dish. In the middle of his meal, walk over a plop a special treat in the dish with his kibble. If you do this a few days in a row, and repeat it once in a while, he will learn that having people near the dish, reaching in, is actually a good thing! Once he seems more relaxed, have other people do this treat thing too so he will see that it's not just you doing it.

Make sure you don't grab his dish and take it away mid-meal, because then he WILL be right in wanting to defend it!

Before you feed him (this should be permanent), make him sit and stay until you release him to eat. This, again, asserts your control in the situation. The dog seems to currently think that he rules the roost.

food aggression is a sign of insecurity around food. first you need to address this. Start by setting a quiet place where shadow can eat and feel secure. you can work on his food aggression by using a technique called shaping with this you would start as far away as Shadow will allow and slowly approach until there is a response then you would stop and let shadow go back to eating.when he does you walk away keep doing this until Shadow shows no response and continues eating when you walk up to him. this is not something which will work over night but will take some time. For other suggestions you should read Don't Shoot The Dog by Karen Pryor. this will give you an idea of the other techniques you may use. this is my suggestion you may be able to use other methods described in the book just as well.

You have a dog with a dominance problem.
Your dog is taking the dominant role in your house. Food aggression is one ofthe ways they show dominance.
You really should get help from a behavorial trainer for this as it can be sort of dangerous and you can get bit.
You need to take possession of the food bowl. Have someone put the food bowl down in its normal place and let the dog eat or see the food. Then you need to walk up standing up and get closer and closer to the bowl and try and block the dog away rom the food. Once you have the dog on one sode and the food on the other side of your feet slowly and carefully make the dog back farther away from the food. Until the dog walks away.
You are taking possession of the food. Do not put you hands in to the situation as that can an most likely will trigger a bite.
You should try to find a trainer in your raea who can come and work one on one with you to help with this aggression problem.
These can be tought to fix but with time and effort it can be done.

You need to get help from a trainer that has experience with aggression. Have her come into your home and help you. Obedience classes will also help, if you can't find a private trainer in your area

If your dog is food aggressive it is likely you are going to have other problems as well. Your dog thinks he is in charge and will probably not give up the top dog spot willingly.

There are also good books about aggression. Look at dogwise.com. You could also watch Cesar Milan. Although in my opinion, working with aggression can be dangerous for a novice, so better to get help from a good trainer.

first off, if he does get aggressive, have more then one person around (so one of you can hold him) and take the food away, its important that you get your dog used to someone interupting his eating at a young age, or when he's new to you. If he gets grouchy he doesn't get food. As soon as he's settled down place the dish on the floor again. Its also good to train your dog to sit a little away from the dish while ur filling it and then wait until you signal that its ok for him to approach the dish. This way you are in command of when he's eating.

with dogs and cats i sit as close to the bowl as possible and have someone else pour the food while im literally a few inches from the bowl. then, while hes eating, i talk sweetly and say good dog, etc. however, DONT move towards him, stay as still as possible while doing this. then after a few days or when hes calm with you next to him, have someone hold his leash while you pet him, then as your petting him in front of his bowl, pour the food, keep up a steady stream of praise, and dont stop the rythmic petting. this has worked with all my rescues, but be careful, ive been nipped at. also, most dogs form these sorts of nuerosis' as a result of not being socialized and exercized enough, try dilligently walking him everyday as far from home as possible. also, dogs see eye contact as aggression, so when he growls, do not make eye contact, look up or away, but dont stop praising. good luck.

Make him sit and stay then put his food down, go over and take the food from him and when he growls say no and in 1 min give it back to him and tell him hes a good boy. keep doing this and he will stop!
