Do NOT bathe your dog until the stitches are removed -- at the very earliest.
If she is really bad, there are products out there that do not require wetting your dog completely down. For example, Nature's Miracle. Check the link out below.

You should double-check this with your vet: I'd wait at least two weeks from the surgery to give him a full bath. The wound could become seriously infected by dirty water running into it. Take old damp towels and a little dog shampoo or mild dish soap. Scrub the dirty parts of the dog, then wipe the soap off with three or four more clean damp towels. If the dirt is near the wound, wipe the shaved areas (in a direction away from the wound) with hydrogen peroxide on sterile gauze pads. And you should be leash-walking a dog that just had this surgery for at LEAST three months - mine needed leash walks for a YEAR!

Try a waterless shampoo or baby powder in the mean time. Most vets say one week after surgery. Also, if it was a knee surgery and your dog doesn't sit calmly in the tub, you may want to hold off giving the dog a bath. Call your vet for some advice.

After 6 days most of the stiches should have partially been healed. What you can do is put some vaseline on the wounds, so that soap and water can't affect it. Wash her gently with a natural soap for animals. After washing, reapply the vaseline, or even better, if you have, bees wax! The advantage of bees wax is that it has a mild anti-biotic effect and the skin will not dry out or get itchy.
Good luck.

the stitches need to be kept dry until they are removed. clean her up with some waterless pet cleaner or wrap her leg in plastic and wash her using the least amount of water you can. usually stitches are only in for a week to ten days at the longest so they should be coming out any day now anyway.
