The greatest variety of terms is to be found in the South, where the most widespread term is snake doctor (a name based on a folk belief that dragonflies take care of snakes). Its all in the site at the bottom.

I am not for sure what you call a snake doctor but where I am from it is the same as a dragonfly. noone ever explained to me why they were called a snake doctor. perhaps it is because you see them around water more than anywhere else.
