Before Windows there was DOS. But.. the first version of Windows was Windows 1.0 released way back in 1985 on November 20. Really... what else would it have been called ;)

If you want, Windows 1.0 through 2.x were also called the MS-DOS executive. At this point, Windows was simply an overlay for commands being executed in DOS. You saw the GUI but DOS was running in the background executing the text based command corresponding to that function. This continued through Windows ME (though DOS became less and less used to the point of being almost useless). With the introduction of Windows 2000 and XP, DOS was completely removed from the scene. DOS is no longer a part of Windows and Windows 2000 and XP are themselves the operating system, there is no more DOS. Though both of those operating systems have command line utilities, do not confuse those for DOS because they are not.

The original windows unless I am completely wrong was called Windows 3.1 for workgroups and it was released around 1983/84 I think.

You might be able to find out if you do a search on google, actually hangon I'll do it now.
This is a link which will give you a bigger more informed run down of what follows:

Under here is what I have found:

In 1983 Microsoft announced its development of Windows, a graphical user interface (GUI) for its own operating system (MS-DOS) that had shipped for IBM PC and compatible computers since 1981. Microsoft modeled the GUI, which was first known as Interface Manager, after that of Apple's Mac OS. Bill Gates had been shown a Macintosh prototype by Steve Jobs early in its development, around 1981, and Microsoft was partnered by Apple to create some of the important early Mac software, such as MultiPlan and Word.

Originally developed by nerdy monks as a means to improve upon manuscript illumination at the peak of the Renaissance, the original name for the operating system probably was "Stained Glass Windows." [LOL]
