I did both. Successful in the military until being wounded & invalided out. Learned a lot in the military however ones attitude has to change in civlian life. In uniform at senior level with the briefest of comment you get immediate attention & almost what you want. In civilian life people ignore that mode of behaviour, ignore you, get up walk away and tell the boss your an ***ole and your definately left on your own!

After a while I adjusted to it all and settled down. A few years later I started up my own business (with others) and it was dammed hard work. Slowly we pullled it around and now its a thriving consultancy and services company.

Given the choice earlier, I'd have left the military and gone into business. Certainly military life had its advantages, however, I'm a lot more comfortable and better off in civilian life operating a successful company.

It all depend on where your heart is, Do you feel this country is worth fighting for, by you? Do you feel like you can make this a better place for you & your kids, and all those you love here, or Do you feel like you can make more of a difference in your own company?
Working for one self takes a lot of work, when you are in the service, you do not have to think, just follow orders, even if you do not agree with the orders.
Being self employed, you have to make all of the decsions, and live by them, you have to be able to work with people, I will not say that a big education is needed but, some type of schooling is needed, there are pros & cons for both of these fields, it really depends on where your heart is, in order for anything to work.
I would pick whatever makes me happy, and the same should go for you......
Good Luck in your path to success.....

When I was an Army Officer, I thought it would be better to be self-employed. Now that I'm self-employed, I think the opposite is true.

Grass is greener and all that...!

I think the ticket is to be a free-lance mercenary.

Both require discipline. So what ever you feel is best for you. The self employed have a greater statistical chance of failing.
