This has already happened in Scotland as most of you know, however the anti smoking lobby in Scotland is now trying to stop people smoke outside the work as well! Already various social events have been hit by people not going. 5 bingo halls in Scotland have shut down since the introducting in April. Football teams are also reporting a slight slump in season tickets sales. Even taxi drivers cant smoke in their own cabs!
I agree that it is 1 of thee most unpleasant things in the world, to breath in somebody elses smoke and smokers breath also stinks, but if you dont like it then dont go there. Restaurant should be smoke free, but pubs and clubs. Glasgow already had several smoke free bars before the ban and they were always empty. They are probably the only pubs in Glasgow grateful for this ban, their trade is now that of a normal pub. It may also seems abit trival but the pubs and clubs now smell of something worse than smoke....... People, people stink, especially when you cram 300 of them in a club.
Smoke never made me boake, some people should be banned from public places for farting and stinking of B.O.
I dont believe anybody will actually stop smoking as a direct result of this act. It will prolong people lives by making them smoke less, but give up, if £5 a packet doesnt do it what will?
I am increasingly finding it harder to discriminate between BLAIRS BRITAIN and HITLERS GERMANY.

I think a ban in all work places, stations, shopping centres and places where food is served is definitely a good idea, but there are a lot of smokers out there and so when it comes to pubs and clubs it should be up to the individual establishment - people then have a choice, but smokers, who are not breaking any law, still have places to go where they can enjoy their habit. In an ideal world we'd all give up, but then again, what would the Government do with out the revenue from tabacco tax?!

I agree with not smoking in restaurants, but banning it from pubs is complete b******s. It should be left up to the landlord to choose whether or not he wants a non smoking pub or not. We pay enough taxes & now we're being victimised & persecuted. I don't & never have smoked in the street, because I think it just looks horrible!! But I made that decision myself & wasn't bullied into it!!
To be honest I'm sick to death of politicians deciding how I live my life!! All dictatorships should be outlawed.
Also, (while I'm on a bit of a roll here.) it's about time we did what the French do. If their government make any changes they don't like, they make their feeling very well known!!
Any major decisions should be put to the vote, not decided by some fat, overpaid p****d old gits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Right, I'm gonna have to lie down now!!!

Yes, I hate it. At least it will soon be banned in pubs and restaurants. Can't wait for that. What bugs me at the moment is people smoking on station platforms and just blowing it all over you, just because they are in the open air. You can still breath in the smoke, even though you're outside. Ugh.

Reading the answers to your question it's easy to tell who are the smokers and who are not!
In 99% of cases the smokers are going to say it shouldn't be banned and the non smokers are going to say it should!
Smoking has been banned in public places in a lot of European countries now as well so we were bound to follow suit!

Of course it should. I didn't enjoy watching my father, a life long non-smoker, dying a lingering, painful, undeserved, premature death from oesophageal cancer in his 50s after decades of breathing in other people's smoke, including his own parents and colleagues for many years before they introduced laws prohibiting smoking in the work place. I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone else that wasn't a smoker, there's just no excuse for smokers inflicting this on other people, besides the unpleasant smell. If smokers want to smoke, that's up to them if they want to waste their money on something that makes them ill, eats into their money and makes them smell disgusting. But anyone who thinks they ought to be able to make public places foul smelling and poisonous deserves such a death.

I do think that smoking should be banned in public places and not only in the UK. When you smoke in public and other people inhale it then they have a great chance of getting cancer because of second hand smoke.

Yes, and of course that is exactly what is going to happen, but not public PLACES, but public BUILDINGS, and places of work. Public places can mean Parks etc. They will NEVER ban smoking, as they will NEVER ban drinking as they bring in too much money to the government.

I think we should go with most other countries and stop smoking in enclosed spaces. I have stopped for a year now, but I never minded going ouside for a cigarette in places like Dublin, Florida and Singapore I would also stand outside or in the garage at home.
We have a duty to our kids not to fill their lungs with smoke!!

No, the nanny state should sod off and start worrying about killing innocent people in Iraq before it puts passive smoking forward as the "real" health issue. Or am I missing something? It's OK to kill women and children who aren't British but it would be terrible for British people to inhale somebody's smoke but it's OK for them to inhale people's car exhaust fumes and factory waste fumes...
