The swastika (from Sanskrit स्वास्तिक svastika) is an equilateral cross with its arms bent at right angles in either left-facing (卍) or right-facing (卐) direction. The swastika is a holy symbol in Hinduism and Jainism. In the West, it is most widely known and used as a symbol of Nazism (the Hakenkreuz). It is traditionally oriented so that a main line is horizontal, though it is occasionally rotated at forty-five degrees. The Hindu version is often decorated with a dot in each quadrant.
The use of the swastika was associated by Nazi theorists with their conjecture of Aryan cultural descent of the German people. Following the Nordicist version of the Aryan invasion theory, the Nazis claimed that the early Aryans of India, from whose Vedic tradition the swastika sprang, were the prototypical white invaders. It was also widely believed that the Indian caste system had originated as a means to avoid racial mixing. The concept of Racial purity was an ideology central to Nazism though it is now considered unscientific. For Rosenberg, the Aryans of India were both a model to be imitated and a warning of the dangers of the spiritual and racial "confusion" that, he believed, arose from the close proximity of races.

The Swastika has been used by Humanity for centuries and means many different things to different cultures
It was a Buddist symbol, meaning Good Luck and Fortune and many Pagan religions carried it as a symbol of Good. The Swastika was know for hundreds of years as a symbol of hope and fortune, and even Christianity picked it up! Some peopel speculate to it being a 'bent crucifix', but notihing of the sort has been proven
The Nazis carried it as just that, a symbol of good fortune and regrowth..its such a terrible shame it has now come to be known as a symbol of evil

It's an ancient symbol, and it did mean good luck, life, power, sun and strength.
Germany started using it in the late 19th century, when the German states unified into one country. They used it because the symbol had Aryan/Indian origins, and so it represented a long German, or Aryan, history. It was a common symbol of German nationalisim at the beginning of the 20th century.
In 1920, the Nazi Party adopted their now well-known red, white and black flag. Red symbolized the social idea of the movement, white the nationalistic idea, and the swastika was the "struggle of Aryan man". Because the flag represented the Nazi party, the swastika quickly became a symbol with a connotation of hate, anti-semitisim, violence, death and murder.

The Chinese one looks different than the Nazi one. And also, the Chinese one does not mean good luck; it is a symbol for buddhism.

I agree with all about it dating way back. A symbol of power, life, good luck, fertility and so on. It's not a bent cross, I've never heard that before. In Egyptian times it stood for all of the above and that of the Eagle. But, if I'm not mistaken...before Germans used it, it was not tilted on its axis.

It's a roman symbol for luck. Just as the symbol for the SS is not two lightning bolts, but a roman rune (symbol) for power. A lot of the Nazi icons were symbols taken from ancient Roman Empire or ancient German symbols.

Because it is an ancient symbol of power. It can trace its roots back to prehistoric cave drawings that used just part of the symbol. If you take it into two parts, and turn it sideways, it has a look like mountains (use your imagination a little). This symbol was used to symbolize the waters of life and was very powerful. Later civilizations used the symbol as it is as a symbol of power. Here is a bunch of information on the swastika.
