Hi, I'm a pharmacist from Oklahoma.

Unfortunately, weight gain is a common problem among patients taking anti-depressants. The side-effect is thought to be due to the way that anti-depressants modify the release of neurotransmitters in your brain. Correcting the chemical imbalance responsible for depression often causes your endocrine system to do strange things.

Discuss the problem with your doctor. Your physician may decide that the risks outweigh the benefits with your current anti-depressant therapy if you are actively gaining weight. However, don't avoid lifestyle modifications as Effexor may not be the sole reason for weight gain. Exercise often, eat right, drink water and get plenty of sleep. Neglecting these things and blaming weight gain on drugs is an all too convenient excuse.

I'm on 150mg - effexor (XL) venlafaxine.
I actually found they made me lose weight, and i have heard this from others aswell.

Maybe you should lower your dose, it is very high - are u in the UK? Cos that sort of dose is only given to patients that have been hospitalised here, because of the effects it can have.

My friend gained 30lbs over a 2 yr time period. Not sure what the equivalency is to stone weight. Anyway, she was taking them in combination with gabitrel (sp?).
