First off what color is your hair? If you are blonde, then going darker is an issue that should be looked at professionally to "fill" the folicle so it will take a new color. Are you going to a salon or the pharmacy? A salon will give you a custom color with swatches to look at. Look on the websites for say, L"Oreal before going to a pharmacy, and I'm sure they will have a color grid with examples of what they sell. Keep in mind that if you are dark haired, a lighter color will not show.

Go to the L'Oreal website and choose the Superior Preference color, it's the best if you're going to do it yourself. They have a great tool that lets you select your natural shade and then gives blondes, reds and brunettes that will work on you.
