My cat is fine with the stray, its the stray thats hissing at her. I can't tell if she has been spayed or not, but my young cat has and she is so loving it doesn't seem to bother her. Also the stray cowers when you go near her and growls like a dog when you pick her up and crys until u put her down. I have reported her previous owner for cruelty because this poor cat has had a rough time from wot i can see!

hi cass
first how old is the stray and is it male or female? i have 8 cats, all rescued as kittens. the young one hiss at the older ones because they are scared of them and and are trying to be top cat when the big ones hiss back they run away, cats are also loners unless you have 2 that you got together, i wouldnt worry to much about them not playing together as long as they dont fight too much where they are damaging each other, if there isnt too much fur flying i would keep the stray and leave them to their own devices. hope i could be of help

There has to be a dominate feline. I have 3 cats all males, 2 I have had for years then one evening when I was calling them in a third walked in right behind them. He was a good year younger then my other two. I had him fixed and he has stayed with us. While they were getting used to each other they would hiss and hit at each other. I let the process run it's course and now they all live, sleep, eat and play with each other often sharing sleeping spaces. Every now and then one of them will challenge the other but peace soon follows. Like I tell my kids when they ask why are they fighting there is ALWAYS a pecking order it's just there way of finding out where they fit in there little pack. I hope you keep your new family member get him/her fixed and trust me they will get used to each other!

We had a similar situation where a stray male cat was introduced to a family cat (male as well). Both of them were not neutered. Firstly, we had to keep them at separate rooms because they were attempting to fight each other. Best thing was to feed them together with the door closed, where their food is close to either side of the door. Then we were swapping the cats between the rooms or keeping one of them locked and letting the other one out. We had to neuter both as well. Agression is reduced now, but they still have to be separed (a year after!). We could not find a suitable in our opinion home for either of them, so we have to be patient ;). If the cat is female I think it is easier, but neutering also definetely helps...

It will pass. May take a while but once your older cat realizes she isn't going anywhere she will be alright. I did almost the same thing bought home a kitten to my 6 year old cat. Hated each other something fierce. Took along time, probably a couple months. But I am happy to report they are the best of friends, they do everything together, eat, sleep and play. I am thankful now that they have each other. Good luck to you.

If you haven't already give them 3 weeks and then make a choice.

I have 4 cats. The first one I had for a year and then I brought another in. At first they didn't get along, now they do. It took about 3 weeks. I then brought in another who is very timid and for some reason likes to start fights with the first cat. I then brought in a 4th cat. Yes I am a little crazy and overcrowed.

For the most part they all get along but they have their moments. I keep their nails trimmed so they can't hurt each other.

Good luck

It'll wear off..Old cat is jealous that you brought in the stray. Just show your old cat that he/she is still wanted n loved. Let the old cat know that your not giving up the stray because he/she is jealous..I know it sounds like you'd be talking to a kid,.lol.. but it will work..-I lived in a house with 4 adult cats then we found a stray (had every intention of giving her up but ah im a softie n decided to keep her..lol) that made 5, the others wern't so happy to see her but eventually warmed up to the idea of a new playmate.. -by the end of summer we had 5 adults cats,1 kitten lol

when I moved in with my now husband, I brought my cat with me and he also had a cat. my cat hated his cat for quite awhile. she would always his at her. they still don't love each other or anything, but she doesn't hiss anymore and they love to play. I think it'll wear off. I would suggest getting the new kitty spayed, if you haven't already. cats tends to get along better when they're both spayed/neutered.

cats react to smell before anything else ....take two towels and rub each cat with them .....then at feeding time put the towel under the other cats bowl it may at first be disgusted and walk away from the food but if hungry will come back and eat ..after a week of this the cats would have got used to each others smells and you will find they will be more tolarant towards each other,

Dont separate them- they will never get used to one another if you do! Just leave them to it; they will each realise that there are two cats now, and settle down. Buy toys they can share, like table-tennis balls, and sprinkle cat-nip leaves on the floor. It might take a time, but they will get there.

Don't fret this will wear off, and occasionally it will still hiss at your 4 year old cat, but they will still become the best of buddies
