Because materialism tells people that things (the right job, the dream home, etc.) can make them happy, and romantic fatalism (the idea of 'one soulmate') teaches people that happiness in relationships is beyond their control.
Either way, everything in culture tells people that happiness starts outside themselves instead of from within. Of course, the outside stuff never works out as we would like. So, people who cannot find happiness from within are doomed to a life of yearning.
Of course, those don't explain all cases of depression, but I'm convinced that they are the reasons it is so much more common now.
Oh, and WARNING!! Depression is CONTAGIOUS!!! Yes, if someone you love & spend a lot of time with is depressed, you are AT RISK of slipping into hopelessness yourself!

Well yes and no. I think there are many reasons for people to be depressed, we live in an uncertain world.
I think part of the problem with the depression epidemic, is people are just too busy and they want a quick fix. Rather then taking time to deal with our emotions, we just want to pop a "happy pill" and make it all go away. That can only work so long though. Also, when People are busy, they don't have the time to actually talk to there friends, and help them when there going through a rough patch, so people are left to deal with things on there own. And many people are there own worst enemy.
Don't get me wrong though. I am not going "Tom Cruise" on you. I do think that anti depressants when used properly are great. But you can't rely only on them, though it would be nice if we could.

I wouldn't say that depression is "out of control", but here's a few reasons for the perceived increase.
1. for years, whole families had to work together, - just to live. Now with a changed family environment, kids 'play' and kids recognize they aren't necessary for the success of the family.
2. The actual every day life of people does not match with the thousands of years and initial design of humans. This 'mismatch' between what we're doing and how we've been design can be causing depression in a percentage of the people.
3. Chemicals / drugs, that we use and that our parents used before / during being pregnant.
4. Hollywood - people 'think' what the 'perfect' person is , and realize they fall up way short. This illusion of perfection can be deceptive, and many people fall for this illusion.

I think the statement of implying depression is bad all over the world, is not a reality. I do however, think that depression is high in the US due to the "gimme more, immediate gratification, bigger and better" society we live in. It can only lead to depression as when these spoiled kids grow up and find that they cannot afford the $$ toys that mom and dad gave them..its a step back for them.
Parents need to see the part they play in the depression epidemic in the US.
This is IMHO. (in my humble opinion)

People don't admit they have it, so it goes untreated. A big reason for that is because depression is perceived and in fact recorded as a mental illness, and many people fear that it will blemish their personal records for employment or future background checks of other types. That myth needs to be abolished so people will seek help for treatment.

Because i think people do not appreciate the roof over their head, the food set in front of them. If we think about all the people that lack all these basic necessities....
depression would be un heard off.

I think more people are being diagnosed with depression because people are more aware of it. I really don't think that more people are depressed now than in the past.
