Like a slightly "sloppy" burger - ground beef in a thick, rich, gooey tomatoey sauce packed into a burger bun.

According to legend, the first Sloppy Joe was made and served at Sloppy Joe's Bar, Key West, Florida (but there are an awful lot of legends that start in bars in the Keys.) They do do a fantastic Sloppy, though, especially washed down with a Frozen Mudslide.

In the United States, a sloppy joe is a hot sandwich, typically made of ground beef cooked in a skillet with highly seasoned tomato sauce or tomato paste and spread between two sides of a bun. The term "sloppy" comes from the fact that eating it as if it were a normal sandwich often results in the meat and sauce spilling out. A sloppy joe that is made from ground turkey instead of ground beef is also known as a sloppy tom.

Here's different recipes for sloppy joes:

My recipe for a sloppy joe is a little different though. Browned Ground Beef, can of alphabet vegetable soup, 2 Tablespoons of ketchup and a teaspoon of mustard mixed and spread between two sides of a bun.

In America, a sloppy joe is a type of hot sandwich which usually consists of ground up beef cooked in a frying pan with a highly seasoned tomato sauce/paste spread on two sides of the bun.
It's called sloppy because it's so messy to eat-in case you didn't guess.

drained browned ground beef
add tomato based sloppy joe sauce
simmer for a bit to allow the sauce to cook into the meat
and serve on hamburger buns or other type of bread
hard to eat on samwhich bread
can be added to spaghetti
my kids really dont care for it too much
doh, just realized my youngest joseph is 8 yrs old
and while he is not browned ground beef in a zesty tomato sauce...........he could qualify as a "sloppy joe"

Super Sloppy Joes

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, 1 turn of the pan
1 1/4 pounds ground beef sirloin
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons to 1 tablespoon steak seasoning blend, such as McCormick brand Montreal Seasoning
1 medium onion, chopped
1 small red bell pepper, chopped
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 cups tomato sauce
2 tablespoons tomato paste
4 crusty rolls, split, toasted, and lightly buttered
Garnish: sliced ripe tomatoes, pickles, Deviled Potato Salad, recipe follows

Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil and meat to the pan. Spread the meat around the pan and begin to break it up. Combine brown sugar and steak seasoning. Add sugar and spice mixture to the skillet and combine. When the meat has browned, add onion and red peppers to the skillet. Reduce heat to medium and cook onions, peppers, red wine vinegar and Worcestershire sauce with meat for 5 minutes. Add tomato sauce and paste to pan. Stir to combine. Reduce heat to simmer and cook Sloppy Joe mixture 5 minutes longer. Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, pile sloppy meat onto toasted, buttered bun bottoms and cover with bun tops. Serve with your favourite sides or sliced tomatoes seasoned with salt and pepper, dill pickles and Deviled Potato Salad. Have plenty of napkins on hand!

PS - I don't know what part of the US that the scottish chef stayed in, but what he described is a Mexicali meal and bares zero resemblance to a sloppy Joe.

Ground beef, with a light tomato type sauce (You can buy the sauce in a can or use your own sauces/spices/seasoning) served on a hamburger type bun. They are very messy or sloppy , but good.
