I have a room that is very long in length and short in width.

One wall on the lengthwise axis is slanted in, with a window set in the centre. There is a small skylight in the ceiling and deep blue carpet which I cannot change.

What colours will open up my room and make it funky? I was thinking also of having a feature wall on the slanted wall. What do you think? What does everyone think of painted on effects, like a tricolour wall or a stencil in the centre? Thanks!

You could with the wall on the lengthwise axis that is slanted with window, paint this a turquise or sea blue-green. Then paint the rest of the room a light silver (with a hint of blue). If you don't like silver you could go an off white, like eggshell. Then i would put your funky expressions in the bedding and the accessories, staying with your turquise and silver colors and maybe one other coorinating color, like the deep blue of the carpet. This way the room doesn't get so over-powering. I would also keep the window covering to a minimum, such as, silver or off white (or eggshell) wood shutters or wood blinds that could be open in the day for light. I'm not sure the slanted wall would be wide enough for a stencil on it without over doing it. You might manage one on a side wall depending on furniture placement. Also you didn't say if your furniture was dark or light in color. A light color would look best with the size of your room. If it isn't light and can be painted, why not try an off-white on it with funky dresser knobs?

I'd say keep it neutral and make it funky with a great bedspread and paintings etc. I had a feature wall and after a while i just got really sick of it. I was stifled I had no flexibility in colour or orientation of my room. Keep the colours of your walls subtle maybe make a feature wall a coffee colour etc, then go wild with everything else. It makes it easier to change. If you have a deep blue carpet, that makes enough of a statement without the walls shouting at you as well!

The use of color is also something very personal. It stimulates our senses, power our mood, and helps create a particular ambiance. How we respond to an individual color depends on our nature, extroverts tend to feel happy with bold colors, while introverts prefer more passive colors.

Through using specific combinations of color, combined with a careful consideration of simple color schemes is often the most effective.

Try not to use more than one or two principal colors in a room, as well as a contrasting or balancing tone. The best way to choose a background color for the room is to trial with a palette of different shades and tones, in combination with the color and textures of the furniture and materials. Remember the general color schemes of a home have to be in agreement. The walls define the space in a room, while the colors, to a large degree, define the mood.

Colored light, furnishing materials, and structural proportions, we can create a home that is welcoming, helpful, and comfortable. Walls are similar to background music: each color tone is like a musical note can create a pleasant-sounding harmony while others grate with each other.

The color with which we surround ourselves will without doubt have an effect on us, and so it is important to feel comfortable with our choice. A discussion with a professional color consultant can help to decide individual needs and select appropriate color.

Colors can be divided into three main groups: those that stimulate and uplift, those that relax and calm, and those that provide harmony or balance. So, having taken a number of things into thought when decorating a room, such as the size of the space, the amount of light, the function if the room, and the style and mood we wish to create, we finally, and most importantly, need to consider the needs of the people who use it.

I'm thinking a yellow. Grab a bunch of paint samples from Home Depot or wherever, and see which one works with your blue. A light, bright color will definitely open up and visually add space to any room. Accessories in other bright colors will add some "funk". Have fun decorating! If you have a Big Lots around, it's an inexpensive way to accessorize!! Also, rag-rolling a couple of colors on the yellow (or whatever color you choose as a base) will definately funkify things.

go with an orange on the slanted wall and greens with the others -- all complementary. it will be restful, funky but the orange will add a bit of flair. Check out Behr's site -- they have a really good paint chip-choosing tool.

BnQ have a paint colour called China Blue. It's very light and bright but it's not a cold blue and goes very well with white's creams and biscuit colours which can be used in a modern or more tradtional theme

I would paint your room a light color like white or even a white with a tint a blue in it. You want to use light colors to make your room bright. you could also use a border or even stencil some of your favorite things in there.
