In another question I asked, I was trying to know what Operating system people generally use and what operating system you are using and how much problem you are facing, how much satisfactory that software is to you. The link to the other question is here " http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Are6Hq6ny4E4MG7VxzrJBHnsy6IX?qid=20060704160612AAcUfvR "

If you want you can put your answer in both places.

I'd say the Macintosh has the best answers. Professional computing with best performance, and the totally multimedia solutions and it is now based on Unix platform making itself like the best linux. The only thing Macintosh doesn't have is the gaming option.

The reason for the popularity of Microsoft Windows is that it has always focused on providing the proper services required for desktop computers and personal use with multimedia and the support required by small scale dumb terminals. Though, it’s always true that Windows and Macintosh, as they are commercial software has been maintained and developed in a much more organized way, but because of the popularity of Windows, Microsoft didn’t actually care enough to secure their system the way they should have. They ignored security and still been successful. Linux has chosen to be developed on UNIX, the Macintosh has switched its development based on UNIX; Microsoft has developed some systems called XENIX, another OS named Solaris is developed by Sun Microsystems inc. is based on UNIX, so it seems to be left with two basic platforms to develop the future OS, NT based Windows and UNIX based others. But NT based technologies has been proved to be very much insecure And it’s actually a fact that the philosophy behind NT system has been derived from UNIX, so it can be said that the future is going to be based on one general platform based operating system technology for desktop to large scale systems.

I use Windows XP home Edition SP2 with auto updates activated.
I use Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar pop up blocker.

I also use the following FREE software, and HAVE NEVER had a problem with my computer. (knock on wood, lol)
I did have a few problems before SP2 for Windows came out, and a few problems back in the Windows 98 / Windows ME days. But not one sense SP2. But again I do all the following.

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (www.spywareblaster.com)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

I would use Ubuntu linux exclusively if I didn't play mainstream games. There are plenty of applications for linux, it just takes a bit more effort to find them. And because most of these apps are free it makes the hunt that much more worthwhile! The number of linux distributions is staggering, but because most of them are free you can try them out and decide if you like them enough to keep them or move on to another flavor. You aren't compelled to stick with that $300 dollar OS because of what you paid for it.

I run Linux (on 73 of my computers), BSD(on 3), Mac OS9 (on two), OS X(on 1)and XP Pro (on two dual boots, that run most in Linux-can boot over for one small application, testing webpages, in that environment).

But, each week, I give away about two or three systems, and receive about two or three systems to repair, re-build, wipe out virus ridden Microsft, install PCLinuxos or Kubuntu, and then distribute to needy children.

CANNOT lease anything from Microsoft, for that purpose, just ask the Salvation Army (Lawsuit, 2003), and college students, now being prosecuted for using 'pirated' wincrap, which they actually paid for!

I run two different OSes on the same computer. If I am doing programming or other technical things I run Linux. It has better open source development tools, and connects to other systems better.

If I am gaming or just goofing off, Windows XP is what I use. It runs more games and is just simpler, but it has fewer controls and is harder to modify.

OS X is my favorite. It just needs a few more applications and games on par with windows. I've used windows the most, and I fix them on a regular basis for many reasons. I would like linux except for the fact that there really isn't any good software for it, but heck, it's free and amazing for servers.
