I want to learn either of the two languages. I speak fluent French. I know a little Italian. I live in America and it seems that Spanish is more useful here. I'd like to read Borges, Marquez, and Neruda in Spanish. On the other hand, I go to Europe a lot, and I am in love with everything Italian. So which should it be?

Hello,

That is a hard one for you. Since you speak French that is helpful. you can concentrate on Spanish right now and learn Italian later on. Since you live in the United States Spanish is very wide spoke there.

You could also learn the two languages, but iyt will take awhile in comparison to learning one language at a time.

Overall from what you wrote right now i would have to say Spanish. Remember that French, Spanish,Italian are very similar.

the one you feel most comfortable learning the language of. you can always go for both. spanish is spoken throughout the world, which would make it useful when communicating with people around you. the italian language is something that would be of interest to you seeing as you are in love with everything italian. if u can speak spanish, you'd be able to understand the languages spoken from countries like argentina, spain, brazil, uruguay, venezuela, mexico, cuba and many others. its up to you really. whatever you decide.

If you learn one, it will be a piece of cake to learn the other one, especially if you are fluent in French.
Spanish is more useful in the US and spoken in more countries so if you are hoping to read Latinamerican authors in their own language (and I suggest you add Allende to your list), I would suggest to go for Spanish.
I speak Spanish and whenever I go to Italy can communicate quite well and understand almost everything (I also speak French)

Why not do both? They are very similar languages. Learn one, then the other later.
