I've heard about meditation, but do not know the methods exactly. Rather I want to ask whether without being mechanical, I can do it with my intelligence, my own mental processes, etc.
If anybody is in practice pl. contact me through my e-mail id anwesha08@yahoo.co.in

9. How do I understand ‘who am I?’
I am only an observer and not the observed. The observer is a witness.

The witnessed is me but not the real ‘I’. Suffering exists in me and not in the real ‘I’. This is an important enquiry in Indian philosophy. The body is witnessed… so the witnessor is different from the witnessed. The mind is observed and the observer is different from the observed. Feelings are observed and the observer is the real ‘I’. So who am I? I am only an observer and to observe I must be consciousness, the awareness. This awareness has no form. If it were to have a form, it can be observed and anything that is observed is an object of perception. The subject is the real ‘I’. So the real ‘I’ has no form and hence it is formless. That which is formless cannot be destroyed. Hence, Indian mystics say the self is indestructible. This has to be experienced and can not be intellectually grasped.

10. How does one meditate?
• Sit in a quiet place. Just observe your thoughts. Let thoughts come and go, but don’t get identified with them. Just be a witness
• Now look for gaps between thoughts. You will see the gaps between thoughts as silence. The observer of silence becomes silence. You cannot observe silence from a noisy state. As you observe the gaps, initial thoughts may be so many that you cannot see the gaps. Soon thoughts will slow down. Then you will see gaps and experience silence
• Next observe your breath. Be conscious of every inhalation and exhalation
• Your thoughts will further slow down. See and experience the warmth of air you inhale and exhale
• Observe how inhalation turns into exhalation and exhalation turns into inhalation
• Now just become silent… without words. Experience stillness. In silence alone, true communication opens up

HINDU has given you good basics ...

It is worthwhile to schedule, preferably daily at first ...

Notice the things that will try and conflict ...planes will fly over ..lol.etc ...isn't this the way with anything we selfdiscipline on...

Breath is a wonderful focus ...notice its sound ...ham sa ...like a swan in flight ...Isn't the universe itself expanding and contracting like a great breathing ... Three things go into our body ...food and sensual perceptions ...and breath ...funny how two of these involve almost all we desire ...

A single word ...or sentence can be a great focus ... as can any diagram or symbol ...

A focus ...simply sifts the frequencies of the mind ... and body ...for mind has frequencies in the body that aren't just the brain ...

If a part of you sings a song ...who is this little "i" singing ...how can a part of you ,sing a song ...while another part is doing something else ...

'Patanjali's Yoga Sutras with Vyasu's Commentaries' is a most excellent tractate if you find you get into it seriously ...

A mantra can be a focus ...like: Who is the real "I" under the little "i"'s ... or the prainava Om

If you desire to read a book ...don't read ...watch TV ...don't ...hear music ...don't ...better yet get into a narrow diet without much flavor ...lentyls and rice without salt ...better yet ..stay in one posture eighteen hrs a day(half lotus works for me-spine as vertical as possible ) ...and don't let yourself move as you want ... and some abstinence(energy from the loins may travel up the spine and open some new senses) ...lol ...

Why ...for moral reasons ...lol...no ...to fight with and witness your desires ...and to find self beneath them ... niyamas (abstinences) strengthen will and selfobservance ...

Things will happen ...when they do ...be careful not to replace one "ego complex" with another ...many yogins make this mistake ...an inflation from one of their earliest inward events ...lol ... but not you Lanoo ... I know you will be more circumspect than this ...

meditation is the use of your intelligence to curb negative thoughts. any habit takes 21 days to become part of you, yet a lax approach will kill the zeal...simply tell yourself, truthfully, even write it down, what exactly u want out of this exercise.
for meditation is simply a mental exercise...which in time improves your body and spirit, as it is a quiet time. we live in a noisy world of instant everyrthing.
meditation will show u how hard it is to get what u want. and haw fulfillin!
sit and write down...everything you want in life. stsrt with a top 20 list. and look at it everyday.read it out. you may knock some things off.you may add them.
then start organising things u can do to acieve those things.
every morning sit upright and think bout what u want for today and every night also, do the same.also revise ur days experiences.if good congratulate urself! if bad, choose to correct them, have a plan of how to deal with it next time , eh?
enjoy!

You are real and so is your universe, in order to be most effective within reality, you must practice consciousness. Being aware of what is real and what is imagined.
To be ineffective is to be tainted by the confusion of the two.
Use the law of non-contradiction to determine reality.
In the words of Aristotle, that "one cannot say of something that it is and that it is not in the same respect and at the same time".

Meditation will make it easier. First learn where every thought that comes through your mind comes from and go from there.
