Yesterday (the 4th of July) I was driving down a major business road in my town. I noticed something rather...odd, to say the least. I saw two Mexican restaurants, ran and operated by Mexicans, that were closed all day while all of the American restaurants around them were open. Isn't it strange that the Mexicans are celebrating and giving their employees the 4th of July off while the Americans are making their employees work? Or is that the American way now...going after the allmighty dollar?

Bag2calli...You missed my point. I don't have a problem with a business staying open on a holiday, that is their choice. It was the irony of the two Mexican restaurants being closed and the American restaurants being closed. And also, I was driving home from a cookout at my mother-in-laws house, smartass.

Mrs. Mollypop- What the hell? Did you not understand? I could care less if the Mexican restaurants were open or closed. I was more concerned that the AMERICAN restaurants stayed OPEN on the biggest patriotic holiday. The immigrants were celebrating more than the native born. Geez. This is a perfect example of someone reading and understanding what they want to and not taking time to see the point. And no I wouldn't be upset if the Mexican restaurants stayed open. They wouldn't be upsetting me at all. Use your head instead of your temper.

Why am I being attacked by some of you? I'm not being mean to any race or group of people. I observed something that I found ironic and wanted someone elses opinion on the matter. Sheesh.

I totally get your point, it is ironic. That only comes to show that Mexicans are trying to adopt to the American way of life. I am Hispanic and I had the day off. My family and I also had a cook out and then went to see the fire works. We celebrated because we are now a part of this country and are glad that this country has it's independence, because we too are a part of America.
Deana_ Joe is wrong because even if the waitress lived paycheck to paycheck that would not change their financial needs, because if they would have the day off then it should be paid. Fourth of July is considered a paid holiday. Or are you trying to say that Americans are being money hungry and not paying their employees for their Paid Holidays?

Most restaurants are open during holidays and weekend because there would be more customers. Most restaurants would close for business on Tues, Weds, or Thurs. Perhaps the Mexican restaurants are closed on Tuesdays, not because of July 4th. On the other hand, as other answerers commented, Mexican restaurants could be closed to celebrate Independence with Americans. Or the owners of the Mexican restaurants might be US citizens or permanent residents.

Aren't you being a little spoiled?
Do you know that those American restaurants probably lost money but decided to remain open for YOUR convenience.
Going after the almighty dollar?
There is a good chance at least a few of the waitresses in those "American" businesses are living paycheck to paycheck. There is a chance that missing one day of work can cause problems with their monthly finances. Why don't you come out of your ivory tower and check out the view the rest of us live with.
To Adri: (answer a little further down) No I'm not wrong, I worked as a waitress lived paycheck to paycheck. I never got paid on holidays that the shop was closed. Most hourly jobs do not get paid vacation.

This is the kind of crap we get from a lot of people on Y!A. They find some small thing in the wording and pick it apart instead of focusing on the actual question. I believe their minds just don't comprehend the question so they find something in it to blast you, the person. In answer to your question some American Restaurants might stay open 'especially' since it's a holiday so they can accomodate those who want to celebrate but aren't going to picnics, BBQ's or festivals. Older people and those who are from out of town might slip in there since it's quicker and more convenient. If the Mexican Restaurant was closed, well, maybe they are legal immigrants who want to show their support of the country they have made their home.

Well ... maybe the Mexicans thought Americans wouldn't want to eat Mexican food that day ... or maybe they thought everybody was going to the beach ... or maybe they're doing crap business and thought they might as well take the day off ... there are so many reasons really ... don't know if it had anything to do with celebrating the 4th though ... maybe it did ...

Americans have become money hungry. Out to get the almight dollar. Mexicans I believe celebrate the 4th of July because they are grateful to live in this wonderful country.

It is sooooo sad but that's the way it is. I was just talking to my Dad last week about how we (as a country) used to close business for holidays. Not anymore everything stays open I myself think it is a pretty sad situation that on holidays when people are supposed to be together we all have to work.

Could it be that 'Americans' are just plain materialistic and they want to make a buck with no regards to giving their employees a day of rest to celebrate the 4th of July???? I worked for a white guy and he NEVER would he gave us a day off, not on Christmas Eve, not on New Years Day. The only day off was Christmas and Thanksgiving. It really sucked.

Ironic maybe, and sad ~ not really funny. Also, Mexican populations invest in BIG fireworks too. Legalities diminish the once well known gatherings for fireworks. Fighting huge crowds, and stalled traffic to enjoy 'safe' fireworks displays have replaced private gatherings. What does it take to be able to attend these public displays?! What does it take to organize a private 'legal' and safe display?! Certainly more than many are able to achieve monetarily and/or legally.
Mexican populations, or recent ancestors ignored often complicated laws to get here, and still believe in freedom on many levels that American citizens gave up long ago. Historically fought for levels of freedom appear to be appreciated most by those who recently fought, or are currently fighting for theirs. Not those who most recently lost levels of well known freedom, and aren't fighting to get them back.
Closing their businesses perhaps to save costs of forced holiday pay, and/or to enable true appreciation for the historical reasons we celebrate the July 4th holiday ~ Independence Day! No fires in our little neighborhood ~ thankfully, it's been raining for days, and the privately supplied and controlled fireworks ~ beautiful and appreciated! But ~ laws were definately ignored!
