Besides your passport, photo ID, cash and ATM or Visa TravelMoney card, the following would be useful:

- Hand wipes wrapped individually (many bathrooms do not have the proper facilities for washing your hands)
- Small packs of tissue (many bathrooms do not provide toilet paper, plus due to pollution, you will need to "clean" out your sinuses fairly often)
- Wear a money belt under your clothes to protect your passport, credit cards, cash, etc. - don't leave these things at your hotel
- Bring lots of comfortable interchangeable clothing (summer can be very hot and winter can be quite cold)
- Bring small US coins to give to children that you meet
- Make a list with the names, addresses, e-mail addresses and phone numbers of your friends and family (this makes it easier to send post cards, packages, e-mail messages, etc.)
- Purchase a good travel guide for Beijing - it's a great city with much to do and see

Most of all, have fun!

Basically, you can get anything you need in Beijing, and probably for less than back home. If you are large, you'll want to pack all the clothes you'll need, but remember, you don't really need that many. Deodorant is a little hard to come by here, but it can be found. If you are female and will have your period, you'll want to bring a supply of tampons. They only sell one kind here, and even those can't be found in any shop. Bring your meds, including any general meds you might need such as headache medicine, medicine for diarrhea or constipation, cold/flu/allergy meds, etc. All that can be bought here without a prescription, but being sure you have communicated what you want might be difficult, and you won't be able to read the labels, so better safe than sorry.

Otherwise, I can't think of anything essential. I've lived here for 6 years and everytime I go home, I realize there is nothing I need to bring back with me, though I do like to bring back my seasoning packets.

Have fun.

P.S. You might want to bring pictures and postcards of your family and your city, or small gifts that represent your area, in case you befriend any locals.
