I recently bought an English Bulldog. He is persistant at chewing and nipping. I have had some progress, but would like others opinions.

My puppy does the same so we attended puppy preschool and their answer was to walk away from the puppy and ignore it for a few minutes. Praise when the puppy doesnt bite. If this process is repeated everytime the puppy bites, they will figure it out eventaully that it only gets them ignored and since puppies love attention the behavour should cease.

Pull all his teeth out and he won't hurt you any more. NO NO I didn't mean it. I'm just in a funny mood today. I think some breeds are more prone to playful biting and chewing than others. The breed you have selected is very prone to biting and chewing. I have never had one myself but I have known people with them and they all seem to have that trait. First do not hit a dog it will not help the training process. It will make some dogs hostile and they will retaliate. He is looking for attention just like a child. He needs a lot of love and affection. If he is too aggressive in his play use a rolled up newspaper and hit your hand hard while saying no in a loud firm voice. You must be firm or he won't get the message. Be patient he will be a good friend.

Sometimes it helps if, if he bites your hand, leave it jammed in his mouth a little bit, so he has to stay that way for a while. It will lose its appeal for him pretty quickly if he knows he'll be stuck like that. Another way to train dogs that's easy, and that works on more than just biting is to get a cheap water pistol, and when he does something he shouldn't, give him a quick squirt in his face right away. These both sound kind of mean, but it doesn't hurt them, and they are effective.

I use the trick my Vet taught me. Tell the puppy NO firmly the first time he/she tries to use your hand as a chew toy. On the second time, take your Index and Middle Fingers and shove them down the pups throat. Not only do their gag reflexes kick in (which is somewhat unpleasant, but not harmful for them) they want to get that foreign object they don't control out of their mouths.

They learn REALLY quickly this ain't play...

My puppy bites - only in play. When it hurts we react with an "ouch" (comes naturally!!). But using a different pitch to normal talking pitch. He always stops - but admittedly he hasn't altogether stopped nipping. Praise him when he stops doing it too.
You can buy sprays to discourage chewing, but a toy would be a preferred distraction.
Are you crate training him? If you are this will help too.
Good luck

My Wiem is still a pup and does that. Train him. First I had to teach him the word "kisses" he knows what kisses are now. So when he bites i give him the error sound(i dont say no) and say "kisses". When he licks i give him treat. He is alomost broken of the habit. He just needs to grow out of some of it. But now he's learning to give "love bites" (leaves his mouth open and kisses)

don't raise your voice when dealing with the dog. simply tell the dog no and don't praise him if he continues. be sure to praise only good behaviors.
