I know that's a tough one, but if you can afford it, I bet she would love a family portrait, if possible; even if you have to do one of the more inexpensive portrait studios (Penney's, Sears) -- they really do great work. If this is possible, give her a gift certificate for the portrait, and that way it's a surprise, everyone will have time to plan a day to be together, and have time to pick out what they want to wear so you all coordinate well. Hope this is a good idea.

If you have a lot of old photos laying around gather them up and make her a family memories photo album. Not just any, but one that has the nice borders around the pictures and little notes written in by you to remind her of the special times you all have had as a family. My most treasured gifts are the ones my children have made for me. I know it took them time and effort to make and they had to think about it not just go out and buy it. You can find all kinds of scrapbook borders and things you can use in the craft section at Wal-Mart stores.

For my Mum's Birthday last year i made a hamper. I got a basket and lined it with tissue, then i bought a half bottle of wine, some chocolates, a cake, some croissants and preserves, a bag of Pot Poperi, a jar of gourmet coffee and a little potted plant and she loved it! Its cool because you can put lots of little things in there that you think she'd like, you've made it and put the thought into it and it's not too expensive as long as you don't go OTT.

Theres a website somewhere that lets you buy a goat for an African family. The idea is that you buy the goat in your mums name and she'll get a certificate and some photos of her goat......you even get a little plastic version for her to keep......i know it sounds weird but it does good and its an unusual gift!

sorry i cant remember the site but if you google adopt a goat I'm sure you'll find it!

spend the day with mom, just the 2 of you.
take her to lunch, eat at the park, take a walk.
watch a movie together. get her a couple of candles from dollar store or walmart.
talk to your mom. go in back yard and have lunch with her, play cards or another board game with her,
just spend the day with her. maybe thats what she is hinting at here.

gift certificate for a manicure, pedicure, massage or to get her hair done, take her out to lunch or the movies, donate to a charity she's interested in in her name, write her a letter telling her you love her and tell some of your favorite memories with her.
