Well I have depression, and these are some of the things I do, maybe they will be useful for you.

Exercise is a great anti-depressant. Seriously, even if a ten-minute walk is all you can motivate yourself to do (cos I know when I'm depressed even THAT seems hard).

Meditation/prayer helps me especially if it's rhythmic or repeated (like chanting with beads).

Avoid chocolates .. they bring a temporary high in mood but after a while I just feel ten times more low.

Avoid alcohol .. it enhances whatever mood you're in so if you're depressed it just ends up making you feel totally hopeless. And even worse the next morning.

I take anti-depressants prescribed by a psychiatrist. I also regularly see a psychotherapist to talk through and work through any emotional issues I have.

I try and avoid too much stress, and try to get adequate sleep (at least 7 hours). I also drink plenty of water (3 litres a day is my goal but I usually forget and manage about 2) and try to eat lots of fruits vegetables and nuts. All this keeps my body feeling fresher, and since I have depression there's a tendency to feel fatigued tired lethargic .. so this helps a great deal.

If you are the person who is depressed, I really recommend talking to a professional .. there are good ones out there and depression is an illness like any other .. I know in our culture people are still embarrassed by anything that they think is "all in the mind", but this is your health! You wouldn't leave a fractured bone to heal on its own because you were embarrassed to show it to a doctor, would you?

If you are asking for someone in your life who's depressed and you want to help .. then just be as supportive as you can, help them out with day-to-day tasks and errands (sometimes just getting out of bed and brushing my teeth takes so much energy .. so paying bills or driving people around etc. is really a strain), try to encourage them and make it easier for them to do things they like, even little things like taking a walk, watching a funny TV show, singing, drawing, reading a nice magazine. And don't tell them to "snap out of it" and PLEASE don't tell them how there are so many people in the world with worse problems so they should be happy with what they have .. this is such a slap in the face to a depressed person .. it's like telling them you don't give a sh*t for how they feel, or that their feelings and pain (which to them are very real and present) are insignificant and not important.

Seek help talk to someone, get natural remedies for it not antidepressants. Keep a journal of your thoughts, eat healthy and exercise. Depression is a serious thing acknowleging it is the first step and seeking solutions is the second. (try taking St Johns Worts tablets) you can buy them in the supermarkets. find out what is causing your depression but take it seriously and treat it naturally if you can do so.

I attempt to get myself busy, either through exercise or getting involved with work or people. Bunkering down by myself leads to deeper depression

Try and call friends and family members. Go out and spend time at a park and watch the kids playing. Just get out.
