Godidiots have a lot invested in their collective folly -- their pride, their sense of community, and more. For many, their lives revolve around their organizing myth -- their closest friends and business associates are also godidiots, their church organizes all manner of social activities, and so on and so forth.
They get agitated when they get a glimpse of the fragile foundation on which their lives are constructed.

Speaking as a theist who does NOT get all agitated when someone questions my beliefs, I would say that it's not so much that their beliefs are fragile as are their communication skills or their forensic ability to defend those beliefs.
I don't think that it's fair to judge the merits of any belief system based on a speaker's ability to defend it, though...unless members of the group of people in that belief system have said, "This person is the best defender of our ideals."
Thank you for a fair observation, however. It's a valid point, and I would hope that more people who are Theists and Christians will take the time to be able to step back and simply answer the questions that are put forth without emotion.

I am a Christian Pastor and because of that I know a lot of others Pastors.
I also have noticed this quick to anger when some one asks a question that is difficult to answer or attacks their beliefs.
I have always felt it was caused by their own insecurities and perhaps doubts.
I'm one that is firmly established in my beliefs therefore I don't get upset and angry.
But then I'm also the guy that admits that, even with all those years of study, I don't have all the answers.

anyone who has a firm central belief by which they have always ordered their life has a readymade solution to any ethical or moral dilemma they need to face.
if you take away that central belief they need to start thinking again - and face each new decision on its unique merits.
many people will do anything in order to avoid thinking. this is how religions got started in the first place.
i am surprised that you make this charge against voiceofreason however. if this is the same voiceofreason who used to post on sparknotes, she always struck me as an unusually articulate and original thinkeuse.

Heresy!! you speak the words of the devil!! Dirty Evil Vile SINNER!!! your going to HELL!!
Joking...Is that not an appropriate christian response? In defense of the Christian faith you are calling our beliefs myths...where is the respect one to another? its normal to become defensive when people are disrespectful to what you believe and live by daily.
I encourage you to continue to ask the hard questions, do so in a way that seeks to respect and learn from those that do not have the same beliefs.

actually you can attack me but of course your bias is showing. i am not a christian as you are assuming but of course that is the point isn't it, you just want to attack a group of people you dislike so you generalize and assume that which is not true. its seems to me that you are the one that is getting all agitated and defensive....all i said was why not let other have free will over their own lives and you want to control their by saying what you think is the truth what you think they should believe....it seems you are the one who has blindly accepted rules which you obviously feel the need to impose upon others...word of advice, before you verbally attack others and assume truths that aren't there get the facts...truth is a wonderful thing for those willing to see it but you see what you want...you can't seem to see that all of us, you, me and anyone else has the right to believe what they want whether its secular humanism, islam or christian or little fairies in the clouds....

Greetings friend-
People often become defensive when you question their beliefs. This can be due to any number of reasons, including lack of confidence in what they say, as you suggested.
Assuming we are all adults here, I would think we should all treat each other with the kindness and respect that we all deserve. Don't you?
Best wishes.

I'm not defensive. Many people are not as well.
I actually have the opposite question. Why do non-believers even CARE what we think?
Do you have some "internal need" to "set us straight"?

Why do Christians always try to make me believe. Why can't they just leave me alone and let me believe in whatever I want? I really don't understand. Stop being so agressive
