do not force your baby to do anything it is not ready for. when your baby is ready to sit (after many attempts) it will do so on it's own, you will do more harm than good. It sounds like this is all new to you. try and join a mums group or seek guidance from your local child centre. enjoy your baby and don't rush it's progress, when it is mentally and physically capable it will move onto the next step in it's life.
P.S. No offence to the other persons answer, but do not go by when their babies sat up, every child is different. Yours may be slow in 1 area, but fast in another. It really doesn't matter. But remember their is no "normal". Good Luck.

Depends.

The baby should be able to sit by her/him self. Does not have to be to stable by the baby should be strong enough.

Also don't overdo it time wise. They get very tired of doing new things.
