One should not lift weights for example when the muscles are still sore and have not recovered from the day before. A better way is to change the kind of workout one does. For example stretching and yoga, two partner massage and even sex are all considered to be workouts that promote blood flow, relieve lactic acid buildup and yet still contribute to overall muscular development and fitness.

It depends, there are many factors to think about. Are you just beginning to work out, or coming back after a break? If so just work through the pain, but make sure you stretch. If it is just soreness you can work through it but not if it is a tearing sensation.
Also, rest the body parts you work for at least a day.

Rest... you should give your body as much rest as you give it exercise. Unless you are nutty and obsessed with working out, enjoy the fact that you worked out and save your energy for the next day when you do it again. One day work, one day rest. The whole "no pain, no gain" thing is a great way to burn out your body and that will lead to erratic working out and possibly injury.
