NOT all dogs hate mailmen as you put it. I have five dogs and I can garantee that I have one that love the mailman/woman. BUT it doesn't help that mailmen are afraid of dogs. I have seen first hand a dog approaching a mailman and this wimp turned & walked away got in his truck and left. MIND you he was walking into the person's yard and he did NOT deliver the mail to that house on the day in question. Checking on this as I found it kind of weird, I was told that mailmen/woman are trained NOT to be friendly with dogs. The reasoning is that SOME dogs DO bite so they take no chances. WIMPS is what it is all about.

I think it's their smell. Mailmen have a smell that dogs just hate. Who knows how many scents they (the mailmen) pick up when they pick up the mail for delivery because our mail goes through so much processing and lots of people come in contact with it. But other than that it's a territory/ protective thing.

Because it is someone they don't know and the dog is protecting you, the home and itself. The dog is successful in this protection 6 days a week. The stranger shows up, the dog gives it's warning and the stranger leaves. That in itself tells the dog it did the right thing and every day the mail is delivered the idea is reinforced in the dogs mind. Your dog sees the mail as an additional threat. It is something this stranger has forced on you, the home and the dog.

Dogs are territorial and protective of their master and domain. The mail man comes back repeatedly, and the dog is thinking that the mail man is trying again and again to enter the premises, so the dog gets more and more aggressive. He/she wants to let the mailman know he/she means business.

My dog hated anyone in a uniform. Even if a cop was by my car I had to roll down the window a little bit. Mail men are not wimps for walking away from a dog . They are smart.

I don't think that the dog really hates the mailman.

The dog sees him as a threat, everyday, he protects the family from the man who comes to the door but is never invited inside.

That is why the mailman is seen by the dog as the enemy.

Because the dog considers the mailman an intruder and the dog wants to guard and protect it's territory. If the mailman seems to flee or turn his back on the dog - the dog will SCARE HIM AWAY.

Dogs are very territorial by nature so when anyone unfamiliar comes close to their turf, they show them who's the boss.

It is not because they hate the mailmen. :)

My black lab/plott hound mix puppy, loves the mailman, everyday when he comes the mailman gives him a bisquit and stops to play for a minute, but normally, like most other people said they're protecting the family and territory
