I believe that due to the sheer number of chinese population, that chinese is probably the most spoken language in the world. Therefore, it could be great to learn it. Remember, however there are many dialects, so you might have to start out with one and then branch off.

If you intend to use the language (like a travelling businessman, or a foreign exchange student, etc...), why not. If you learn it just for the sake and learning and have neither plans on going to a predominantly chinese country/community nor any intent to interact with them on a regular basis, then forget about it. It's not worth the effort.

Since mandarin chinese has the most speakers in the world and considering China's influence on trading, it could be a good idea.

But I hear it's a very hard language to learn.

Good luck

Yes, it may be hard, but it is worth it. Think of all the people who speak chinese. Think of all the jobs opening up because of China's booming economy. Of course, I may be just a bit brainwashed by my Chinese teacher.

It is harder as you have to learn new characters. You could try Italian - It has a lot of similar words to English.
