Ahh the true challenge in the myriad world of cyberspace, how to find someone you feel is trustworthy enough to become friends with. First seek the chatrooms that share your interests...it's no good if you wind up starting the conversation with nothing in common. Trust is a big issue, if the person you are talking with isn't willing to trust you or vice versa then there is no way friendship can blossom, start small and don't feel the conversation has to be forced...get to know them and let them get to know you. Over time you will find yourself more comfortable with them and opening up more, if you don't it's probably a sign that something is not clicking. My best advice towards this is twofold...first trust yourself, you know what you are looking for in a friend and what you are comfortable with, don't be afraid to step back if something makes you uneasy. The second is don't let setbacks shake your hope. There are wonderful people waiting to befriend you, and it is always a shame when a bad experience takes away a chance at finding a dear friend. No words can describe the wonderful expierience when you and a true friend click and you feel the warmth of knowing that someone is out there for you.
Good luck in your search, hope I have aided you in some way.

I met my first on - line friend about 13 years ago through an online service call Prodigy (don't even think they are still around). We have met, we still speak by computer now and then. I hit him up whenever I need advice. Depends what you are looking for. Online friends can be great, because they know you, what you look like (unless you choose to share this with them). They are just friends to talk to. They don't usually judge, and can probably give some good advice, because they don't know all parties involved, and don't have to worry about hurting someone else.
I know my friend worked things out with his wife, because we sat and chatted for hours and hours. He and I were going through the same kind of situation with our respective spouses. He gave me a man's point of view on things and I gave him a womans. We are still good friends today, though we don't get to chat mearly as much.

A real friend? Hmmm, well, lets start with the straight forward...Looking for a friend to chat with - laugh with - share things with. Be open...be honest...Don't give too much of yourself at first. Be reserved. Be decisive. Surf places such as Skype...Yahoo....thats how I found my friends. I talk to folks all over the world. We have stayed in touch for as many as 4 years. I have had friends visit me from New Zealand, Switzerland, Dubuai. Its an amazing world in cyber space. Set yourself free...be open to anything...with limits of course!
