If it is a city or county facility then call the booking desk and ask them. If it is a state facility then check the department of corrections website for that particular state. Every state has a department of corrections and they all have websites. There is an inmate search function that lets you enter some one's name and an age range, and if they are a guest of the state you can find out. There is really no way to check federal prisons that I am aware of.

You could call the County/city and see if he is in the County/City lock up. If you believe he is in a state Prison, most states have Department of Corrections websites, and list the Offenders and where they are, or you can call them also. If you have a name, DOB they should be able to tell you something.

Call his mother. Or the police. Or, a more fool-proof method, get yourself arrested and learn sign language to talk to inmates in other pods, do the research first hand.
