To each his own!
Being married signifies a life long bond and commitment to another person. If a gays want to spend thier life openly together why not celebrate it with a ceramony?
They would only continue to do it in secret. At least this way they can share medical and retirement benefits. Not to mention knowing that you are legally allowed to make a decision in your partners best interest and vise verse, if and when needed.
I feel if your with some one your life you should be able to have those perks no matter who you are.

The question should be "What is the purpose of marriage?"
Marriage is a union, recognized by the society. It is a contract, joining the lives of two people. It is not about "love" or "romance" or "holiness" ... it is about finances and property, estates and inheritance.
Since homosexuals are allowed to own, bequeath and gift money, property and valuables, there is no reason not to allow them to contract with one another for the purposes of transferring those same things.
If two homosexuals want to form a legally binding contract between them, why not allow it? It would be simpler than trying to write iron clad wills, and would regularize their unions, making them more difficult to dissolve.
If the only objections are moral, then there are no valid objections, at all.

Homophobes shouldn't be allowed to vote, but more importantly, shouldn't be allowed to procreate....
But in all seriousness, in legal grounds alone, it is hard to justify denying recognition to same-sex couples (which is why courts in Vermont and Mass have ordered some form of same-sex union). Discrimination based on gender is clearly prohibited by federal law, and so, denying someone the right to marry just because of their genders, is a kind of discrimination.
The only viable argument against same-sex marriage is a religious/moral one-- i.e. that homosexuality is wrong and incompatible with a moral society. While people may hold to that view (and are completely entitled to), the laws of the US at least are NOT based on religion, regardless of what the Jerry Falwell-people say, but on a separation of church and state.
Insofar as divorce is legal (and widely accepted as legal) albeit immoral to many, there is little reason to deny legal recognition to same sex marriage, which likewise is legally entitled, if morally objectionable to some.

Nope, I don't even understand why gays would want to get married. Marriage is the union of a man and a woman in the sight of god. If you are not going to believe the bible in that a man should not lay with another man why would you want to get married. I am not gay bashing or anything but, homosexuality is completely wrong. Basic common sense would tell you that if I have an "outie" and she has a "innie" that we are made to fit together. If we both had outies well then there's your answer!

Yes I do feel they should have the right to marry...if they are pledging their love and committment to each other, they should have the legal rights to the other's health insurance, the right to be their health proxy, the list goes on. To deny them marriage will not make gays "go away"...and who should be the one to judge what these people choose to do with their lives! Gays don't go around telling hetros to not marry, or to not have children or have a say in each other's lives...why should gays be judged so harshly. Judge not lest ye be judged...and how about if we keep our noses out of other people's bedrooms.
