When you go to the grocery store or what not, do you feel more safe sliding your card through the slit then you do when your paying over the internet?

Personally, I feel just as safe. That doesn't mean I feel 100% secure because I know there are ways for people to intercept my data. But I feel a lot safer doing an electronic transaction than handing my card over to a stranger. Let me tell you a quick story.

Several years ago I went to a restaurant and paid my bill with a credit card. The waiter took my card and returned about 5 minutes later with the slip I needed to sign. Problem # 1: He gave me someone else's card. A few weeks later, I received my credit card statement in the mail. Problem # 2: Not only did I have the charge for the restaurant showing, but I had over $500. in charges I never made. Problem # 3: That waiter and a few of his friends were stealing credit card numbers and making all kinds of unauthorized purchases.

With internet or card reader transactions, my card never leaves my hand so Problem # 1 is eliminated. Instead of waiting weeks to see what charges are on my card, I can view an online account summary in just a couple of days (many times in just hours) and if there's a problem I can report it right away. That takes care of Problem # 2. And by eliminating Problems 1 and 2, it greatly reduces the chances of Problem # 3 happening.

So the fewer people who physically handle my credit card, the safer I feel.

I don't use Credit Cards OR purchase over the Internet.

My own personal guesstimating is that everyone in the United States will have their identity stolen 3-4 times over the next 10-Years if it continues at its current rate.
