We can trace it back to the culture and history of the Filipinos.
First, before the colonialism of the Spanish (Pre-colonial or Prehispanic Period), they already have relations with other countries or culture like China. They undergo a process of trade (barter trade) where the Filipino ancestors trade their materials like pearls and beads with silk and porcelains with the Chinese traders. Even up to now, we can see that there are evidences of trading through artifacts. You may go to a museum and if I may suggest, the National Museum Archaeological division would be a great help for your question.
Next could be interpreted by some of the socio-historians as the colonial mentality that Filipinos adapt from the colonizers. Filipinos tend to look things that come from other countries or most commonly known as imported as somewhat of great importance. They value it as their most valued artifact. From here, we can then trace the hierarchical status that further evolves to the Filipino civilization. Porcelain considered being fragile and especially “man-made” and “hand-made” is already valuable esp. if there are intricate details from these porcelains. These ornaments then represent as the status quo of the owner that they are indeed rich (a sign of pride & glamour) and they value such artifacts like these as if they are patrons of art and culture.

Maybe it simply is what the person prefers?
If I were rich, I'd stick to monbloc furniture since I find them easier to use, clean and maintain.
Could also be that the furniture reminds him of home.
Maybe his home back with his parents had such furniture and he has realized he wants to have a "piece of home" with him in his new home?
