If your wanting a serious gaming machine and you have the money then I would recommend an alienware but there are many companies that will custom build your system, that can work out just as gd but for a lot cheaper price.
I would recommend this as a minimum system an AMD Athlon64 X2 3800 Processor (Dual Core); ATI Radeon X1900XT 512MB PCI-E (Shader Model 3.0); 1GB RAM; 200GB SATA HDD; A 939 Socket nforce 4 motherboard with PCI Express and SATA support.
This is a good system and will play all of the latest games and should last a long time but Microsoft launches Windows Vista at the beginning of 2007 and that will be the only Windows Operating System to support the new DirectX 10. Therefore I would wait until ATI and nVidia release their cards with Shader Model 4.0 and DirectX 10 support, they should be releasing these by the end of the year. (Upcoming next-gen games such as Cryteks 'Crysis' are DirectX 10 games'.

Video card, memory and processor are very important. I recommend gaming video card like NVIDIA GeForce with 512 mb will do or 1GB memory if you're very hungry for high end gaming. You also need memory with 512 mb or the best is 1GB. In processor you need is 3 Ghz clock speed.

go for a good processor (3GHz+ or AMD64-chipset) and have 1GB+ of RAM and get the latest Graphics Card (VERY important for gaming). You'll need a fair sized harddrive for games (say 160GB+) and a DVD drive.
