Rumsfeld's corporation sold North Korea nuclear materials and technology during the Clinton administration. Rummy became Bush's secretary of Defense and got caught up in the whole "axis of evil" thing, where Bush basically called a list of countries "evil" in a public speech.
This was a massive diplomatic faux pas, but hey, people loved him for his "decisiveness" and ability to see the world in comic-book colors. North Korea, of course, has been really beligerent since then. Their leader is some sort of spoiled idiot that really wants to start something, but we've been almost completely ignoring him, which only pisses him off more.
Now he has the means to launch a nuke at us, and our incompetent administration has ignored him for 6 years while he got this ability in favor of invading and pissing off countries that posed no real threat to anyone.

N. Korea is established as nuclear capable, from the satellite views showing widely dispersed electrical use (lights and such) without any other type of facility to produce electricity. If it's not hydro, coal, or something like that, it has to be nuclear.
The have launched several missiles into the Sea of Japan to demonstrate there ability to deliver a warhead at a great distance.
What concerns me is a "mis-hap" could lead to nuclear exchange. Say, if a missile mis-fired during testing, and hit China. China is certified nuclear capable, and would respond to an "accident" with aggression. I'm not sure if the missiles already launched have any type of warhead (I haven't heard), but even just a test missile crashing in someone's back yard would be disturbing.
Right now, I would guess the Orient is a hotbed.

north korea launched some test missles capable of hold nuclear warheads into the sky today. the missle are long range missles with the capacity to reach the west cost of the US. So the US is considering this a threat. not sure what else is going to happen, but several world leaders had an emergency meeting within the last 24 hours regarding this. read yahoo news, it a great source of info.

Even after being labeled 'Axis of Evil', just recently
Kim Jong the leader of N Korea wanted to have direct talks (one on one) with Bush Admin but the Bush Admin refused. Too good to talk to someone directly that is not as mentally 'stable as 'they' are.
Then Bush and Co provoked and threatened the unstable leader by telling him 'You better not test any missiles. If you do there WILL be consequences to pay.'.
Well, lo and behold, the unstable N Korean leader tests the missiles anyway.
Big egos everywhere. Who won this pissing contest? Bush or Kim Jong? We the people are for sure the losers. We have to worry about two leaders that can't communicate other than with pissing contests that lead to wars.

After being named as part of "the axis of evil", and seeing the USA invade Iraq, North Korea has come to the logical conclusion that the only way to prevent attack by America is to possess WMD.

In a nutshell, their leader isn't especially stable and wants to kill us. They are developing (or depending on who you believe, have already developed) nuclear weapons, and unlike in Iraq, we KNOW this to be true. Their leader, Kim Jong Il, has admitted they are developing their nuclear capabilities. Not only that, they are currently testing long range missiles that may be capable of reaching the coast of California. This isn't a new thing, this man has been an active threat for years.
