There is an island in the Mediterranian that may be the basis for the myth. It had a supervolcano, and had a massive explosion a few hundred years before the Greeks wrote about Atlantis. They have found that the harbor matched the Greek description of Atlantis' harbor. Half of the island was blown away in the explosion, and divers have found beautiful artifacts in the surrounding waters that may be an early version of Minoan art. The Minoans were a very sophisticated, peaceful people, and their art was beautiful and drew on nature.
