I run Windows XP Home Edition. Disk drive D has capacity of 3.49GB and only has 390MB freespace left. I never save to drive D, should I panic or is this normal. Will the efficient running of my pc be affected?

by formatting a drive some of drive capacity has been lessen up, but if your talking about after using it for quite long then it became that small i guess there's some hidden files on your drive D: or if you delete some files, it is still exist in your drive d so better use clean up. 3.GB is too small nowadays. i suggest you upgrade it to large hdd. in addition small freespace affect the running condition of your PC.

what's drive c's status d will not affect the pc very much you may not be able to save anymore file on drive d once you fill it up but if c's capacity is also almost full then c will affect the pc's performance for a few reasons. defragmenting may not help you since you are running out of resources to save files. you should buy a bigger disk or an external hd to start freeing up your hd

How much space do you have left on drive C?

390MB isn't much at all by today's standards. Chances are Windows will try to use any and all available space for its virtual memory, and if you're running heavy applications such as graphics software, media players, etc. this lack of disk space is going to be a problem.

Get a new, bigger drive. It doesn't cost that much.

Years ago, the advice with windows was to keep 25% of the disk free. This would allow the computer to do it's 'housekeeping' e.g. defragmenting the hard disk.

More recent advice in a computer magazine suggested that at leat one gigabyte be kept free.

In some cases, a computer might not start up normally or at all.

I suggest you keep a minimum of 500 MB free.

I use USB devices to achieve this.

Has the hard drive been partitioned? If so, My Computer will show 2 hard drives, one will be named C:\ and D:\ and or more, depending on how many partitions that your hard drive has. What is on the D:\ drive? Did the manufacturer put the repair disc on there? Has the computer been set up to save files to the D:\ drive?

Go to Start>My Computer>D Drive and see what the files are then report back.
