To Caseybecker82 - for the sake of the future of humanity I really, really hope you are a twelve year old girl. Some people watch movies for a living, you illiterate doink (jeolosey?) and they report what they see. If you don't recognise the syle of a professional critic in the post you presumed to comment upon then perhaps you should have someone read a few newspapers to you. Incidentally, Madonna won exactly one award for Evita. She was nominated for a Blockbuster Entertainment Award (sic) and an MTV Movie Award, but didn't win either. Bizarrely she won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical, suggesting that it was either a very, very poor field that year or the judges thought Evita was a comedy and Madge's "acting" was hilarious. Probably both.
Incidentally, you little geek, while you are getting such a biffie for Madonna you might wish to contemplate her proud record of winning films awards - The Razzies. Worst Actress for: Swept Away (2002), Worst Screen Couple for: Swept Away (2002), Shared with: Adriano Giannini, Worst Supporting Actress for: Die Another Day (2002). Worst Actress for: The Next Best Thing (2000), Worst Actress of the Century For Body of Evidence (1993), Shanghai Surprise (1986), Who's That Girl? (1987) and others. Worst Supporting Actress for: Four Rooms (1995), Worst Actress for: Body of Evidence (1993), Worst Actress for: Who's That Girl? (1987), Worst Actress for: Shanghai Surprise (1986).
You might also wish to contemplate that she was nominated for a number of films but didn't win. Imagine the shame of winning an award for being a WORSE actress than Madonna?

You spelt her name wrong! It's Madonna! She was amazing in Evita, hence her winning all those awards. People just don't want her to be good acting because then it would mean she was brilliant at everything. People don't give her movies a chance, they just say Madonna that'll be rubbish. When some of her movies (granted not many) have been really good, for example Seeking Susan she was wicked in! Anyway she's the queen of music so who cares?
Some pathetic people who are consumed with jeolosey over her fame and driven personality just rant and rant - like the person above me. If you dislike her so much why are you so obsessed with her that you've seen every single one of her movies? THAT'S PATHETIC!

Really didn;t think too much about it since it was a musical and she was in her element. It would have been hard for her to blow THAT movie.
However, on a whole, I thought Evita was a great film, one of my favorite musicals (there are very few of those) and I was rivited by Antonio Banderas who still isn't known for his singing in this country. I'm a huge fan of director Alan Parker and I thought he did an amazing job on this. Also, DP Darius Khondji is my fave and he did an outstanding and overlooked job.

I really liked Madonna in Evita. Her acting was good for the character she portrayed.

Mediocre. If an Argentinian woman had been cast for the role, it would have been more authentic. But since the Hollywood rules say that most stars have to be American, because the US public does not like foreigners in leading roles, she got the job.

Madonna cannot act. She stinks up every single film she is in. Even when she was playing herself in "Desperately Seeking Susan" (which was shot before she became famous, but released after) she was rubbish, third-rate, wooden, unresponsive - and it's all downhill from there. "Body of Evidence" was knicker-elastic splittingly funny, not least because of her woeful performance, and "Who's That Girl" continued this proud tradition. "Shanghai Surprise" is, simply, beyond belief. Her "acting" in this putrid, fifth rate garbage can hardly be described - the English language just doesn't have words to describe things that not only scrape the bottom of the barrel but dig under it. Does anyone actually remember "Dangerous Game", "Girl 6", or "Blue In The Face"? No? You are very lucky - they bombed so badly and so rapidly that they hardly got a professional release. With a record like that it is somewhat disquieting to realize that she was actually building down to a career lowlight with these films - "Swept Away". It bombed, was savaged by the critics, and went straight to video. I saw it on VHS at a friend's place. I don't think it even got onto DVD in this country, but you can get them on Amazon. Why you'd want to is anyone's guess. For sheer, jaw-dropping awfulness this film and both stars - Madge and her male co-conspirator, whose name escapes me - just beat everything else into a cocked hat. Her acting is just diabolical. I have seen better acting from hatstands. The script doesn't help - she plays a spoilt li'l society beeyatch who is shipwrecked with a rough and ready crewmember from her private yacht, and he teaches her that a woman's place is at the feet of her man, her lord and master, a lesson he reinforces by beating her. Naturally she accepts all of this and falls madly in love with him, sacrificing her yacht, money, place in society etc etc to become a submissive wife to her new, dominant man. At one stage she actually kisses his feet. I'm not joking. I managed to type that out without vomiting, but whether you will be able to watch the film without doing so is anyone's guess. Really, that is the plot of the film, and that is the character she plays. I can't spoil the ending for you because I didn't get that far - it takes a lot to turn my stomach (I've been to Milton Keynes six times!) but my tolerance for ugly, pointless drivel knows some bounds and I stopped watching before we found out what happens when the pair are finally rescued. If anyone out there had the cojones to sit through to the end - perhaps they were being punished for some heinous crime - they might enlighten me. "Swept Away" was was 'directed' by Mr Madonna, Guy Ritchie, who hasn't made a film worth watching since ... no, he has never made a film worth watching. Apparantly Madge caused chaos and mayhem on the set by constantly overruling his direction, which would have been fun to watch. Maybe he should have taught her method acting, putting her into character by beating submission into her? Whatever the excuses, revolting characterisation, a screenplay written by a disturbed (and talentless) misogynist and a director who couldn't direct traffic, her acting is risibly bad. The scene where she finally realises that the Universe will all fall into place just so long as all those pesky women will stop being so frisky an' goshdarned assertive an' banging on about equality an' rights an' stuff an' will submit to abusive and violent men is something to behold - while she is supposed to be showing some kind of agonised spiritual enlightenment she actually looks like someone has shoved a pineapple up her jacksie. Okay, nobody would be good in this film but she could at least have made an effort.
The weird thing is that her films always bomb at the box office but she keeps getting roles. Have to wonder how she does that - with a track record like hers anyone else would have been consigned to the "Footnotes in Screen History" pages of Variety many, many years ago.
No matter. Evita was a shoe-in with or without her, it would have made money with Jimmy Krankie in the lead role. She does little damage since she never has to act (the woman can sing a little, which helps) but there were so many, many actors who could have done so much better.
So, overall rating for Madonna's acting : -376 out of 10.

Acting-wise, she was terrible. Too much overacting. It did not do justice to such powerful story. But the songs were rather nice.
