Try using certain codes in your search to narrow things down.
1) Consider more unique terms.
For example, if searching for tips in a videogame called War, don't simply type "War tips" in the search engine. You would most likely receive thousands of links to unrelated pages. Try considering key words that can narrow things down. "war videogame tips playstation" for example may narrow the search better.
2) Check if the search engine permits the use of +, AND, - and ""
Some search engines, notably yahoo.com and google.com allow the use of those in order to be more efficient in searching. The - sign is a poweful tool since it can allow you to dictate what keyword found in some searches would mean the search is to be ignored.
For example, if you wanted to look for information on the Virgin Mary and why she is called the Madonna and Child in some nations, you wouldn't want to search for "Madonna story" cause that will most likely bring back results on Madonna the music artist. But if you try "Madonna Virgin Mary Story -MTV" that may narrow things down since the search automatically ignores results that include the mention of MTV.
3) Consider adding keywords which help give you results that have more credibility.
For example, try adding "official" or "-fan" if you want to find websites for movies that are not just made by fans of the movie.
Hope these help!
Good luck!

www.stumbleupon.com
This is a downloadable toolbar that allows you to chose from many many catagories and subcatagories and then 'stumble upon' sites in those catagories. Say, for example you are in need of information on cats, so you select 'cats' from your list on the tool bar and then click 'stumble' and it will bring you to a random site on cats. Then you are able to rate if you like or dislike the site, this makes the stumble upon pages oriented to what you are searching for in general, and does not take you to sites you would not want. The more you rate things, the better sites you get for what you want. This eliminates all the search engine stuff with keywords, so you don't search for 'cat' and get something like, 'looking for 'cat'? check out ebay' everytime you search. It also has much better filters so you do not get stuff like 'hot wet p***y cat'. Stumble upon is available for many browsers, but I strongly recomend Mozilla Firefox. There are also many other add ons for the stumble upon tool bar.

First, choose your keywords wisely. Select descriptive, specific words. For example, [ 2004 football statistics ] rather than [ football ] or [ Vancouver 2010 Olympics ] instead of [ Olympics ].
If you're looking for an exact match, try a phrase search. When you enclose your search query in quotation marks, you'll only get results for the exact terms you entered in the order you entered them. For example, [ "friendly robot" ] rather than [ friendly robot ].
