Because we have set our affections on things of the earth and not heavenly things. People on some level have in their minds that we will be here (on earth) forever and therefore try to find things that they feel they need to live here and be happy, but nothing that they find makes the temporary happiness last...because there is a God given emptiness in us that can only be filled by accepting God as our Lord. So as long as people keep trying to fill that spot with things rather than a relationship with God then they will never be content with what they have, no matter what or how much they have, even the richest people.
