First of all, I think, that your tutor want you to learn really well with the material you are using now.
This way you gain experience. Then when you dominate the technique or the material, you can pass to another.
And if you feel you are okey, try it at home or in your spare time to see the results.
Art is creation, and sometimes new thing also can bother the tutors, so keep on going ...

I suppose it depends on what age you are? If you are only a 1st or 2nd year (years 7 or 8) I guess listen to your tutor., but if you are doing a higher level of art (GCSE or above) I say go f**k your teacher and use whatever you like to make your art. I have a friend who obtained an A at A-level and his work was carried out in spray paint on reclaimed materials like cardboard boxes and bits of plywood.

Don't be a rebel in school. Follow what the teacher says. Express yourself outside of school. Find a good art group (there are loads around) and experiment there

Art is about freedom of expression.
I had a big bust up with my art teacher when I was at school. That was about me wanting to doing something different from everyone else too.
Just go for it, be a rebel!

Exam boards like to see that you can use a variety of materials/skills/techniques in exams/coursework. I know that from when I did my GCSE Textiles exam.

go THINK about it and if you are really wise ask your classmates to get together and really surprise him.
