To me, the best family is the one in which you are related by love. Blood doesn't have much to do with it at all, although I'm lucky in that i am blood related to some of the people I consider to be family.

I don't consider my mother or my brothers to be my "family". My family is my children, my husband, my husband's neices, my best friend, her mother, and her sisters, as well as other friends. They are the people that love me and support me. They tell me the things I need to hear even when those aren't the things I want to hear.

Family is the people who are there for me.

I believe that family is created by the individual as we move along through life. and the people whose lives we are born into are just those we need to get us there. It is believed in certain circles that we chose or pick the people we will be born to, before we are born, because they are the foundations, the stepping stones that we use as a springboard to lead us into the lives of the people who hold the knowledge we need to carry us through this life into the next (If you believe that sort of thing that is.) I believe that the concept of self is something that should be recreated every so often and the only way to do that is to introduce new ties, new bonds and incorporate their experiences into our own lives. I read once (don't remember where?) That everything we are as a human being, as a person before the moment we realize it was given to us by someone else in our lives and the moment we do realize and accept that is the moment we can begin to make choices and have opinions all our own based on whatever we decide. I think family is a starting point and a continuation, something we create as we move ourselves along our lives and that it is not just about blood nor should it be.

P.S. I think I remember where I heard that from. It was in a book called the soul's code by James Hillman. Great read too!

Family are people who are there for you when you really need them and are almost unaware you do. Family are things that can love you back when you love them. Family is where the heart is, even if the mind and body are not.

My concept is family grows throughout life. If your family is the same size it's always been, then you need to grow as a person.

Ideally people who are there for you in tough times and support your dreams and ideas. You do the same back. It is like a small social group which is connected through experiences and grows up as you grow up. This group can either help you if the members have a healthy social life themselves or destroy you like your worst enemy.
So you do have to keep your eyes open but also you have to let yourself trust this group sometimes. Trust though is built from a young age, the first steps of the family. You will have to be trained for it. Because trust plays a great role in your life. Probably the most important to your social success and acceptance.

My concept about family is that a family are friends in whom you can trust, share knowledge and ideas with, share a conversation, have breakfast, lunch, and dinner with, sometimes even have snacks with. A family is someone you can depend on in times of need. A family is someone who cares about your every aspect of life. A family is someone who treats you like an equal. A family is someone you can have laughs with and share memories with. A family is solid when all of the things I mentioned are met. A family is what you make of it sometimes.

Man is a social creature. He builds an atmosphere around him. He builds an abode, though many other creatures do the latter, the former is done in great elaboration by man.

A human exists in bondings and this bonding is the cause for our tendency to make friends.

A human interacts with this close set of people in wide extend and so much so that their lifes get bounded up.

Thus a family is evolved.

Thus family is something we build for ourselves and it is something that differentiate us from other animals.

Family can be anyone you want to have close to you. Of course everyone has a biological family (some good and some bad), but family can also be close friends you can count on as well.
