it depend on what field in IT Industry you want to get in
but if you thinking about a career change and you are new to IT i recomment you start with the ICDL (International Computer Driving Licience) as a start to know what is computer then if you are intersted in a career in IT Support or networks go first for Comp-TIA A+ then Comp-TIA Network+ then you ready to go for Microsoft Certification
for microsoft certification now come the field for network administration start with the MCSA Track (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) then MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer)
if you looking for database Administration track got MCSA First (Cause database administration need good knowledge about network administration ) Then goto MCTs Database Admin (Microsoft Ceritified Technology Specialist)
if you are intersted in software development i recommend you go for some Basic software development courses then hit for the MCSD certificate (Microsoft Certified Solution Developer)
all what i mentioned is the way to IT Industry when you achive the level of any of this certificates i am sure you will be ready to go and will now where to go next

for networking: go for CCNA 1-4, CCNP, Novell certification.
for system admin: go for ITE 1, 2, A+, MCSE
for Programming: hehehe..dude...post as many solved answers as possible in the programming group like dot net group, or other programming contests like ACM etc.
i live in malaysia, here lots of big computer firms' regional offices are situated, they always asked for expertise, not certificates.

Remember, not all IT careers are technical. If you are looking at business analyst, then you may wish to consider PMI's Project Manager Professional certification.
