A supernova is the last stage of a dying star. As the core collapses inward due to gravity, the outer portion of the star explodes blowing off a shell of supercharged gasses that can do damage to other stars and solar systems light years away. If Proxima Centauri - our closest star besides the sun - were to supernova, it would pose a serious threat to our own solar system and to earth itself.
