Hey, apparantly South Africa's not gonna be able to hold the 2010 soccer because the country isn't ready! Is that true? If so, I can't damn well believe it. Here in Australia there are newspaper reportings saying they want it here!

This is the first I've heard. Are you sure? I'm gonna have to check it out. Get back to you when I can.

I wouldn't trust those Australian newspapers on South African issues.

NEW INFO: I just heard from my dad in SA that our beloved country is way behind schedule on preparations for the 2010 World Cup and that if we don't get our act together, we might really lose the chance to be hosts. This is sad and I bet that this will bring moral down by 100%. Goodness me, what's up with the money guys? From what I've heard, the stadiums are not up to standard and there doesn't seem to be any money to complete it. What happened to all the money that was promised in 2002? I still have the Huisgenoot article where it says that there is more than enough money.

No its true! Apparently SA's crime rate is increasing, we are having problems with our transport situations etc and more other reasons. They are thinking about hosting the 2010 world cup in Australia but they haven't said for sure yet! There is 50/50 chance here that SA will host the 2010 here. South Africa is not letting this go so easily so lets hope for the best! (don't mean to be ugly to Australia, i just would love the 2010 to be held in SA!)

The story recently broke that FIFA has started making a "contingency plan" to host the Soccer World Cup in Australia.
FIFA has since denied the report but I reckon there could be a hint of truth in the matter.

At present SA does not have public transport up to scratch and tourist accomodation will struggle to cope with the huge influx of fans. Just to give you an example: The "Gautrain" which is meant to be a high speed train from Pretoria to Johannesburg was supposed to be finished a few months before the World Cup. Now apparently some of the Pretoria stations will not be completed in time. Also Danny Jordaan, the organiser of the SA bid commitee, was recently quoted on 702 talk radio that the fans could sleep in tents!! In the middle of Winter? How safe would that be?

In all probabilty, SA will host the World Cup but it will take monumental work to pull off one that matches up to the current Germany World Cup.
SA has hosted succesful major events in the past (Rugby WC, Cricket WC etc) but the Soccer WC is on the next level. I personally hope that we do pull it off and pull it off in grand style!

Mag die son skyn vir jou daar onder in die land van die skaap ;-)

They are not ready now, but they will be in 2010. Things like these are decided years in advance so "last minute" changes are very unlikely. It must be an unconfirmed rumour you read about.
